15 Vintage Travel Trailer Design Secrets to Inspire Your Restoration

Vintage Trailer Hero

STOP SEARCHING AND START BUILDING!

Are you ready to turn that rusted relic into a rolling masterpiece? The history of RVs isn’t just in books: it’s alive in the craftsmanship of every antique trailer we preserve. At the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum, we don’t just display history; we live it! Whether you are hunting for vintage campers for sale or elbow-deep in a frame-off restoration, these 15 secrets from our vault will change your project forever!

1. ASSESS THE FOUNDATION FIRST!

Don’t touch the paint until you check the frame! Structural integrity is the heartbeat of vintage travel trailers. Corrosion hides in the corners. Use a wire brush and a flashlight to inspect the chassis.

2. THE BIRCHWOOD GLOW!

Look at our 1955 Spartan Imperial Mansion. Its secret? High-quality birchwood interiors! To replicate this at home, use amber shellac. It creates that warm, honeyed hue that defines the 1950s.

3. MASTER THE RIVET!

Don’t use standard pop rivets! Authentic restorations require buck rivets for that seamless, aerodynamic look found on the world’s most famous antique trailers. It takes two people, but the result is eternal.

4. FIND A CELEBRITY MUSE!

Need a theme? Take a cue from our 1931 Mae West Chevrolet Housecar. It wasn’t just a trailer; it was a dressing room with velvet seats and Hollywood flair. Define your style before you buy your first gallon of paint!

5. POLISH TO A MIRROR FINISH!

Aluminum trailers like the iconic Airstreams in our collection require a multi-step polishing process. Start with a heavy-cutting compound and finish with a cyclo-polisher for that legendary “silver bullet” shine!

6. HIDE YOUR TECH!

The 1937 Hunt House Car was a pioneer of hidden features! It featured the first fold-away toilet. Keep your restoration looking period-correct by hiding modern USB ports and LED controllers inside vintage-style breadboxes or cabinets.

Vintage Model T and Trailer

7. WEIGHT IS EVERYTHING!

Old-school trailers were heavy. When restoring, consider modern, lightweight materials for subfloors. Balance the weight over the axle to prevent dangerous swaying on the highway!

8. SEAL THE ENVELOPE!

Water is the enemy! Never use silicone on vintage travel trailers. Use Butyl tape or specialized RV sealants like Lexel to ensure your restoration survives the next 50 years.

9. EMBRACE MUTED EARTH TONES!

Don’t over-saturate! The most stunning restorations utilize a balanced palette. Think sage greens, neutral greys, and warm golds. Reference our “Founders Hall” for color inspiration that honors the heritage of mobile living.

10. SOURCE ORIGINAL HARDWARE!

Don’t settle for plastic replacements. Scour salvage yards or 3D print metal replicas of original handles and latches. Small details create the big impact!

Chrome Detail

11. REIMAGINE THE LAYOUT!

The history of RVs is a history of efficiency. Study the 1913 Earl Travel Trailer. It maximized every inch of space without a single slide-out. Use multi-purpose furniture to keep your floor plan open and airy.

12. INSULATE FOR ALL SEASONS!

Original “pink” insulation holds moisture and causes rot. Use modern spray foam or Roxul wool during your restoration. Stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter without losing the vintage look!

13. RESTORE THE BADGE!

Your trailer’s emblem is its signature. Clean, repaint, and clear-coat your original manufacturer badges. It is the ultimate mark of a professional restoration!

14. UPGRADE YOUR SUSPENSION!

Don’t trust 60-year-old leaf springs. Swap them for a modern Torsion axle to give your vintage camper a smooth ride. Protect your hard work from the bumps of the open road!

15. VISIT THE SOURCE!

DO NOT START WITHOUT A PLAN! The best way to learn is to see the masters at work. Visit the RV/MH Heritage Foundation in Elkhart, Indiana. See the 1913 Earl, the Mae West car, and dozens more in person.

Whether you are a lifelong camper or a history buff, this guide is your ROADMAP to the evolution of the recreational vehicle. From horse-drawn wagons to the sleek silver bullets of the mid-century, the HISTORY OF RVS is a story of freedom.

Click here to book your tour!

THE DAWN OF THE NOMAD: PRE-1910

BEFORE THE ENGINE! People still wanted to roam. It started with the Gentlemen Gypsies.

  • 1884: Dr. Gordon Stables commissions “The Wanderer.”
  • THE SPECS: 18 feet of solid mahogany. Two horses to pull it.
  • THE VIBE: High-class leisure for the British elite.
  • US ARRIVAL: American hunters and explorers began building “houses on wheels” in the 1890s.

LOOK FOR THIS: See the primitive wooden structures in our early collection! They prove that the urge to travel is INSTINCTUAL!

1910: THE BIG BANG OF THE RV INDUSTRY

THE YEAR EVERYTHING CHANGED! 1910 marks the official birth of the commercial RV. No more DIY. PRODUCTION BEGINS!

  • LOS ANGELES TRAILER WORKS: They started it all.
  • PIERCE-ARROW: They debuted the “Touring Landau” at Madison Square Garden.
  • LUXURY ALERT: It had a fold-down bed and a LAVATORY! In 1910!

ANTIQUE TRAILERS from this era were the first step toward the modern Class A motorhomes we see today. They were heavy. They were loud. They were REVOLUTIONARY!

Early motorhome exhibit inside the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum.

THE ICONIC 1913 EARL: A MUST-SEE EXHIBIT

ATTENTION! You cannot visit our museum without standing in front of the 1913 EARL.

  • THE ANCESTOR: This is the direct great-grandfather of the travel trailer.
  • CRAFTSMANSHIP: Look at the wood-spoke wheels. Look at the craftsmanship.
  • INNOVATION: It solved the problem of “where do we sleep?” during the dawn of the automobile age.

Explore our full list of member companies like A.C. Nelsen Camper World to see how the industry grew!

THE TIN CAN TOURISTS: A SOCIAL REVOLUTION

JOIN THE CLUB! In 1919, the “Tin Can Tourists” formed. This wasn’t just about the vehicles. It was about the COMMUNITY!

  • THE VOW: Members promised to be helpful and maintain high moral character.
  • THE GEAR: Often self-modified Ford Model Ts.
  • THE NAME: They ate out of tin cans! They were the original VAN LIFERS!

By 1921, there were over 17,000 members. They paved the way for the campgrounds and RV parks we love today. WITNESS THEIR LEGACY!

Patriotic display of RVs by the heritage fountain at the RV/MH Hall of Fame.

THE 1915 GYPSY VAN: THE FIRST CLASS A?

IMAGINE THIS: A 25-foot, 8-ton beast of a vehicle.
THE OWNER: Roland Conklin.
THE TRIP: Huntington, NY to San Francisco.

  • AMENITIES: Kitchenette. Full shower. Phonograph.
  • CAPACITY: It could carry 17 people!
  • IMPACT: It showed America that the “house on wheels” could be a palace.

THE GOLDEN AGE: THE 1930S AND BEYOND

AIRSTREAM ARRIVES! No name is more synonymous with VINTAGE TRAVEL TRAILERS than Airstream.

  • WALLY BYAM: The legend. The pioneer.
  • THE DESIGN: Inspired by aircraft. Riveted aluminum.
  • THE DURABILITY: Many 1930s Airstreams are STILL ON THE ROAD TODAY!

During this era, we also saw the rise of brands like Airfloat Coach Manufacturing. Their “streamlined” look defined an era of optimistic American design.

PRO TIP: When walking through our museum, look for the transition from wood to aluminum. It is a STUNNING visual shift!

TEARDROPS AND TENT TRAILERS: ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL

COMPACT POWER! Not everyone wanted a palace. Some wanted a TEARDROP.

  • 1937: The Teardrop trailer peaks in popularity.
  • THE DESIGN: Sleep for two. A kitchen in the hatch.
  • THE GOAL: Efficiency. Lightweight towing.

We also showcase pioneers like Apache Trailers. They mastered the “fold-down” concept. SEE THEM IN PERSON! It is engineering genius in a small package.

THE POST-WAR EXPLOSION

WELCOME HOME! After WWII, soldiers returned with a hunger for the open road. The industry exploded.

  • THE MOTEL ON WHEELS: Families wanted comfort.
  • THE INNOVATIONS: Propane appliances. Better suspension.
  • THE BRANDS: Companies like Aristocrat became household names.

The HISTORY OF RVS mirrors the history of the American middle class. As highways grew, so did our trailers!

Polished aluminum travel trailer on display inside the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum.

WHY AN RV MUSEUM MATTERS

PRESERVATION IS OUR MISSION! Without the RV/MH Heritage Foundation, these stories would be lost to the scrapyard.

  • EDUCATION: Learn how engineering solved travel problems.
  • INSPIRATION: See the craftsmanship of industry pioneers.
  • NOSTALGIA: Step inside vehicles that haven’t changed since the 1950s.
